Our Board of Directors includes 10 members with varied backgrounds in different disciplines, which include Banking, Management, IT, Law, Accounting, Investment and hands on experience in various industries.

  • William C. Irwin - NED Board Chairman

    Bill Irwin joined our Board in October 2004 and was later appointed as Chairman of the Board in October 2009. Mr. Irwin is an experienced banker with extensive cultural and commercial experience in strategy, business development, risk and change management. Prior to joining I&M Bank Rwanda he was employed for more than thirty years by Standard Chartered Bank serving in Africa, the US and Asia.  Latterly, he was the Area General Manager with responsibility for their various businesses in South, Central, and East Africa.

  • Robin Bairstow - MD

    Robin was appointed as a Managing Director in September 2015. He is an experienced Corporate Banker and has a successful track record with over 25 years in the financial services sector with both domestic and international banking organizations. Prior joining I&M Bank, he held senior positions at Standard Chartered Bank, Citibank NA, BOE Bank and Nedbank across Central Africa, East Africa and South-East Asia. Robin is a graduate of the South African Merchant Naval Academy and holds a CIBM (SA) and a  Master of Business Administration from the University of Leicester.

  • Soundararajan Madabhushi - NED

    Soundararajan joined the Board of Directors in July 2012. He has been a career banker for 38 years with the State Bank of India, Standard Chartered Bank, Commercial Bank of Africa and CFC Group. He was the Managing Director of CFC Financial Services Ltd and Managing Director of CFC Bank. He is currently CEO of Delta Corp East Africa Ltd, a real estate development company substantially owned by the reputed Reliance Industries Limited from India.

  • Faustin Byishimo - ED

    Byishimo was appointed to the board as an Executive Director in December, 2015. He has served the bank for over 15 years under different managerial positions. He holds a BBA in Accounting  and has in-depth operational and strategic management experience that was acquired through various top level assignments within the Bank which include his most recent tenures as the Head of Corporate Banking. He continues to serve the bank as the Divisional Head - Business Development overseeing the Corporate, Business, Retail Banking as well as Product Development functions of the bank.

  • Richard Mugisha - NED

    Richard Mugisha joined the I&M Bank Rwanda board of Directors on February, 2010. He holds a Master of Law (LLM), from the New York University, School of Law and is the managing partner of Trust Law Chambers which specializes in commercial Litigation and convenyancy. Richard brings to the board depth and expertise from managing transactions in the Energy, Banking and Finance sectors in Rwanda; as a current Member of Governing Council Kigali Bar Association and Disciplinary Committee of Chartered Public Accountants. He also participated as a member on the Rwanda Financial Sector deepening planning committee and the National Committee for Regional integration.

  • Dr Estelle Jonkergouw - NED

    Dr Jonkergouw was appointed to the Board of Directors in March 2018. She holds a PhD in Econometrics and has previously held risk management functions within the banking and insurance industry making her an expert in enterprise risk management.  She has also developed executive risk management trainings and teaches in this field at the Dutch Actuarial Institute and at University of Amsterdam. She currently  works as interim professional providing  advice and support to strengthen the Financial Risk Management Department. Estelle previously worked with financial institutions: Rabobank as the Senior VP - Head Risk Model Validation and Methodology, Group Risk Management where she validated all risk models for Basel II purposes.  

  • Arun S. Mathur - NED

    Arun Mathur joined the bank's Board of Directors in July 2012. He chairs the Board Administration, Procurement & Remuneration Committee and is also a member of various Board committees of the Bank. Mr. Mathur holds a B.Tech (Hons) degree and has been a career banker for 43 years with the State Bank of India and Grindlays Bank, India in 1982, and several other banks in Eastern Africa until he joined I&M Bank Ltd in 2000 and was promoted as CEO in 2002. He is also a director of I&M Bank Ltd in Kenya, Bank One Ltd in Mauritius, I&M Bank (T) Ltd in Tanzania as well as Kenswitch in Kenya. He also serves as a member of the Governing Council of Kenya Bankers Association.

  • Andreas Grenacher - NED


    Andreas Grenacher was appointed to the board in February 2017. He is currently working as the Managing Director for the regional Corporate Finance boutique, DGP Advisory. Before joining DGP Advisory, Mr Grenacher held senior positions in the corporate finance and asset management divisions of the German development corporation (DEG), at Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse and worked in Nairobi, London, Frankfurt and Zurich. He has more than 19 years of experience in the finance sector and holds a  Master of Finance at the Westfaelische-Wilhelms University Muenster, Germany.

  • Crystal Rugege - NED

    Crystal joined the Board of Directors in November 2017. She has a bachelor's degree in computer science from Grambling State University and master's degree in information systems and management from Carnegie Mellon University. She is currently working with Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) as the Director of Strategy and Operations. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon University, she worked at IBM's Silicon Valley Lab as a software engineer and also as a technology consultant providing IBM’s customers with business intelligence solutions. She joins the Board with experience in the technology and education fields.

  • Paul Simon Morris - NED

    Simon joined the Bank’s Board of Directors in September 2018. He is a UK national, an experienced international banker who has served in various senior positions in Europe, Asia and Africa with Standard Chartered Bank Group and 2 large local banks in Mongolia and Vietnam. He has experience as a Chief executive Officer for 14 years in 6 countries in Asia, Simon also worked in Africa as the Regional head of Consumer Banking Africa for Standard Chartered Bank. Simon holds an MBA from the Henley Business School in the UK.

  • Nikhil Hira NED

    Non Executive Director

    Hira, Director at Bowman and former partner of Deloitte East Africa, he joined the board in February 2019. He holds a BSc Joint Honours in Accountancy and Process Engineering from University of Salford, England. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Kenya and also registered with similar institutes in Uganda and Tanzania He headed the tax practice for Deloitte in the East Africa region and in addition was the Technology, Media and Telecom industry leader. He has specialized in taxation since 1987 in various jurisdictions around the world including the UK and East Africa. He sits on the Advisory board of Eastern Africa Association and Nikhil is also a member of the board of I&M Bank in Kenya.

  • Alice Nkulikiyinka - NED


    Alice is the Managing Director of Business Professionals Network Rwanda (BPN Rwanda), a Swiss international non-profit organization that fosters entrepreneurship worldwide. Prior to returning to her home country, she worked close to fifteen years in the banking sector in the renown Swiss firms Telekurs (Six Group) and Avaloq where she held different managerial positions in Europe, America and Asia.  Mrs. Alice Nkulikiyinka holds a Master of Science in Economics and Computer Science, University of Applied Sciences Worms, Germany and a Master of Science and Information Management, University of Constance, Germany.
